Keeping WordPress post types code clean with simple classes

My previous screencast for developers went down pretty well. I had some constructive feedback about it. And at the end of the last screencast I hinted at something useful that I do in my code that might be useful to others.

So, partly with the aim of just “having another go”, to see if I can improve this style of teaching, and partly because I felt that I had something else useful to teach, I’ve made a video that explains how I use some simple object oriented classes to make my code for querying post types cleaner, simpler, more re-usable, and easier to understand and maintain.

In response to feedback on the previous developer video, I’ve tried to make the screen and text appear bigger, and I’ve tried to fix the problem of keyboard noise – it’s not quite gone but should be better.

Here’s the video. Useful links are below. ¬†Feedback is, again, welcome.

Tags

Today we take an in-depth look at how to use tags (there’s another tip for using categories in here too!)

Categories – Part 2

We continue our series on categories and tags with a further look at how to use categories.

Tomorrow we’ll look at tags!

Excerpts

Today we look as excerpts. Excerpts are short pieces of text that describe what a post is about. I’ll explain how and why to use them and how they might appear on your site.

Screen Options

The Screen Options menu is a hidden-away tool in the WordPress Dashboard that full of things you probably didn’t know that you didn’t know.

The Post Editor – Part 2

After Friday’s initial look at the basics of the post editor, today we’re going to look at some advanced features of the editor. Specifically:

  • Paste as Text mode (again) – what it is and why you might use it
  • Text/HTML editing mode
  • Distraction-free writing mode

The Post Editor – Part 1

OK, sorry for missing a Press Up while I was ill. Today I’m back – albeit with a slightly croaky voice – and looking at the post editor. Tomorrow I’ll cover in more detail the “Paste as Text” option that is mentioned briefly here, and the text editing mode and distraction-free writing mode.

Inserting Videos

I have no voice today, but I’m marching on. Here’s me showing you how to insert a video from a service like YouTube or Vimeo into a WordPress post or page.

Apologies for the lack of audio. ¬†You’ll need to read my instructions on-screen!

The Post List – Part 2 – Screen Options and Bulk Edit

Some advanced and/or hidden features of the WordPress post/page list.

The Post List – Part 1 – Overview

An overview of the WordPress Post and Page list. See also Part 2 which will appear on Monday.
